The University of Groningen Centre of Entrepreneurship (UGCE) is a dedicated centre for developing entrepreneurship education, support systems and research. Together with University College Groningen it forms a faculty of the University of Groningen dedicated to interdisciplinary study of complex societal changes characterized by disruptive innovation and real uncertainty. In UGCE we focus on the role of entrepreneurship in such developments. We are active on important themes such as entrepreneurship in energy, health, renewal of industry, and sustainability. For these areas, University of Groningen and the Medical centre UMCG develop among other things information, chemical, material, sensor and water technologies, as well as knowledge from social, behavioural, and language sciences, for which we are interested to study the entrepreneurial processes in these fields. Partly based on observing existing empirical patterns as well as actively creating our own living labs with partners in our region and internationally. Some projects running at the moment are on corporate entrepreneurship (science foundation financed), rare disease entrepreneurship, experiments on imagination, and other individual entrepreneurial aspects, survey on entrepreneurial mindset, ecosystem support for technology based and social entrepreneurship.

Our research, education and business development & entrepreneurship support activities are based on the "engaged scholarship" philosophy (Van de Ven, 2008), meaning a close connection between excellent research and teaching to real life problems. UGCE was deliberately organized within the university, to ensure that a close connection between the practical support we offer for business development, research and education is guaranteed. The combination of research based consultancy, academically supported business development support and teaching for regular students and executive programmes is a strength of UGCE model.
In our research, we work on theory development, several data gathering methods, experiments, living labs on individual, organizational and eco-system level.
You will be part of a relative new (since 2013) and young team (12 members). In close collaboration with full professors in and associated to the group, and the core group of assistant professors you can further develop your research. There are also possibilities to work with PhD students in the group and other colleagues from other related research groups. All applicants should have completed their PhD, or be close to completion, and specialized in the field of Entrepreneurship or related fields.
The capabilities of UGCE are organized in three connected pillars of a research centre, an Entrepreneurship College and Venturelab North, a living lab for active business development support. Our research is embedded in SOM, the graduate school of Faculty of Economics and Business. We are teaching in most schools and extra curricular for all interested students, and for business development and entrepreneurship support we work together within Northern Knowledge with SBGG (business generator Groningen), Triade, Research & Valorisation, UMCG, Energy Academy Europe, Hanze University of Applied Sciences and we are allied via a double professor position to the Center of Entrepreneurship NIKOS of the University of Twente. Internationally we work together with among others Uppsala University (EIT-Health venturelab, Erasmus +), Higher school of Economics (HSE-Moscow), Sheffield University (European research summer school on Entrepreneurship), Thapar University, India and Fudan University China.
UGCE is a relative autonomous unit, it is part of the Faculty UCG and as stated above works closely together with Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB) which is AACSB and EQUIS accredited.
Based in Northern Netherlands, the University of Groningen is one of the oldest and largest in the country and is ranked highest as number 59 within the global top 100. It is truly a global institution with close collaborations with renowned international universities, including Uppsala, Göttingen, Ghent, Tsinghua University, Osaka University, UCLA, and the University of Pennsylvania.
We are looking for candidates who would (soon be able to) meet the following requirements
1. a PhD in small business and/or entrepreneurship, or a closely related field
2. a demonstrated potential for conducting high quality research and publishing in top management journals.
3. team players with good communication skills.
Contract length: 24 months.
The University of Groningen offers a starting salary depending on qualifications and work experience between € 2,588 (salary scale 10 Dutch Universities) and € 4,757 gross per month (salary scale 11) based on a full-time position. In addition, the university offers a 8% holiday allowance and a 8.3% end of year bonus and participation in a pension scheme for employees.
