University College Groningen (UCG) is a faculty of the University of Groningen and is looking for a Head of Student Affairs. The Faculty was created in September 2014 and currently hosts an English-taught Liberal Arts and Sciences (LAS) programme. Staff and students are highly internationally diverse. UCG aims to develop as a distinctive faculty of the University of Groningen, with an annual enrollment of 200 students in the LAS programme that marks a unique footprint in the international arena of academic Bachelor education by 2020. The Department of Student Affairs consists of approximately 10 FTE and is responsible for the adequate support of the Faculty, including students and staff from the Liberal Arts and Sciences programme. Tasks within the Department concerns time tabling, course registration and course evaluation. Other tasks are ensuring the communication to students and staff by the student desk, online on the website and by email correspondence and dealing with information requests. Recruiting students is also part of the responsibilities within the department. Technical support of teachers and students including support of Blackboard and other innovative tools and maintaining the campus building and infrastructure is also done by the Department.

Job description

The Head of Student Affairs is responsible for supervising the staff members in the Student Affairs Department and therewith for the performance and results of the Department. Under the responsibility of the Academic Director of Education, the candidate will be responsible for the planning, organization and administration of the programme. Additionally, the Head of Student Affairs will prepare reports on the progress in programme development and student’s performance to the Faculty Board, the Academic Director of Education and the Senior Tutor. This task is part of the quality assurance process (PDCA cycle).

The Head is expected to manage and coach staff members in a stimulating and inspiring way. The candidate will represent UCG in several University meetings and may guide or participate in projects related to educational support and innovation.

Requirements

We are looking for a new colleague with the following skills, abilities and qualifications:
- academic level of working and thinking
- minimum of three years of work experience in a management role in a complex organization
- independent thinker, proactive, flexible, pragmatic, open and creative
- relevant knowledge in the field of educational administration, quality assurance and student support
- customer friendly and problem solving attitude
- excellent speaking and writing skills in English and preferable also in Dutch; willingness to work in an international working environment
- a strong commitment to the values of diversity and inclusiveness as an intrinsic element of professional relationships in academia.

Conditions of employment

Contract length: 12 months.

The University of Groningen offers depending on academic record and experience, a salary of € 3,475 to € 4,757 gross per month (salary scale 11 Dutch Universities), based on 38 hours per week. UFO profile: Department Head 3. The Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities is applicable. A temporary contract for one year will be offered in the first instance, with the possibility of tenure.
