De organisatie - The National Institute for Public Health and the Environment

The Dutch National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) protects and promotes public health and consumer safety, and we help to protect the quality of the environment. We’ve done so for more than a hundred years and RIVM has become a knowledge institute that is at the heart of society. RIVM carries out independent research and provides the government with trusted policy advice regarding health and the environment. We deal with issues concerning infectious diseases, vaccinations, population studies, lifestyle, nutrition, drugs, the environment, sustainability and safety. We do this through research, advice, direction or implementation. RIVM annually produces and publishes numerous reports. RIVM has a total of approximately 1.800 staff.

De afdeling - The Centre for Infectious Diseases, Epidemiology and Surveillance

The Centre for Infectious Diseases, Epidemiology and Surveillance (EPI) at the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) analyses and monitors the occurrence and trends in infectious diseases in the Netherlands and carries out studies on the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of measures to control such diseases. We collect local, regional and national data on infectious diseases, analyse and interpret these data and report the results in support of infectious disease control practice.

In close collaboration with other departments of the Centre for Infectious Disease Control (CIb) we conduct surveillance to evaluate the national vaccination program, STI (sexually transmitted diseases, including HIV), healthcare-associated infections and antimicrobial resistance, food and water-related infections and respiratory infections. Based on the analysis of surveillance data and our specialist knowledge, we initiate epidemiological studies and develop mathematical models to understand (determinants of) transmission and to evaluate the effectiveness of interventions. This is done to support infectious disease control policy development.

Besides working on national infectious disease surveillance, EPI also works in an international context. EPI actively contributes to the surveillance programs of the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) and the World Health Organisation (WHO). Since 2014 EPI hosts the WHO Collaborating Centre for Antimicrobial Resistance Epidemiology and Surveillance (WHO-CC AMR). The Collaborating Centre supports the WHO with the implementation of the Global Action Plan on Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) by providing technical advice on surveillance methodology and technical support to member states towards strengthening of national AMR surveillance capacity. AMR surveillance is a necessary ingredient in the national strategies to control AMR, that are currently being developed as it provides the necessary insight into the current AMR situation required for an effective and targeted approach to control AMR.

Functiegroep
